The New Civic Station
Beechwood Avenue, Boscombe, Bournemouth - 3rd Year University Project, 2022
The new Civic Station is located in Boscombe, on Beechwood Avenue. The site consists of a building called Shelley Manor and a park. The project's brief was set in 2028, the design was to make a civic station that could house 20 different spaces (2000 sqm) and a residential unit consisting of 3x24 studio apartments (2000 sqm).
The main idea around the design was to try and preserve as much of the existing building as possible. At the beginning of the project, an analysis of the existing plans was carried out, where the circulation of the building was highlighted as a large aspect of what could possibly be changed. It consists of corridors that lead to nothing and hinder people from exploring the whole building. Therefore the circulation was taken out and placed on the outside, on a second structure. This allowed for the programme the client had asked for to fit into the building.
